horizontal gas ports as they should be, vertical ports puts to much of a load on tops of compression rings and flexes them plus the holes builds up carbon and plug. Old ways of doing it.
Pistons will still get polished to get sharp edges off. This is key on big comp setups, anything sharp will promote hot spots and detonation
